Industry Snapshot
More than 350 million tons of material are generated annually in the US from the construction and demolition of roads, bridges, and buildings. The material generated is mostly concrete, asphalt, wood, drywall, metals, cardboard, and asphalt shingles.
C&D recyclers are capable of recycling whole
buildings.
Industry Facts
The industry estimates nearly 3000 recycling facilities, 2500 of which recycle only concrete and asphalt.

All of the North America states have facilites. Since industry byproduct is based on building and demolition, the quantity of C&D materials in each state is directly linked to the annual building and construcion activity in each specific state.
According to our annual industry survey:
- Total amount of potentially reusable byproduct materials generated annually is 350 million tons
- At least 50 percent of the material is used annually

The use of recycled concrete as a roadbase product has shown the material to equal to, and even superior, in performance when compared to mined natural aggregate in highway applications.
